About Us
Justin Prizant, the Founder of Session Resurrection recalls that his earliest music memory was getting a Blondie record on his 5th birthday. "I played "Call Me" nonstop and drove my older sister out of the house."
Fast Forward…
Shortly after high school, Justin began experimenting with audio recording equipment and music instruments by way of creating original compositions. During that time in his life, Greyboy's (aka Andreas Stevens) Freestylin' album came along. His recordings immediately shifted Justin's musical interests, and he began to consume anything resembling Greyboy's "acid jazz" or "soul jazz" sound. This genre lead Justin to discover original soul jazz pioneers such as guitarists Melvin Sparks and Grant Green, and organ players Jimmy McGriff and Jack McDuff. This new music interest also lead Justin to current artists, the Greyboy Allstars and Slide Five, who had mastered and performed in this rare groove musical style. The recording labels that included these artists became as intriguing to Justin as the music itself. Renowned jazz labels like Blue Note, Prestige, Ubiquity and Luv N' Haight were instrumental in sparking his passion to build a collection of recordings with other artists.
Session Resurrection Was Born.
Justin recruited musicians from nearby Youngstown/Warren, Ohio, where a lot of notable rising talent was coming from at the time. Chances are, during this period, that you danced to "Celebration" by Kool & the Gang with founding members Ronald Bell and Robert Bell, or to the sounds of the Ohio Players with Billy Beck on keyboards at a wedding reception or your favorite nightclub. Having the good fortune and ability to work with area drumming legend Shedrick Hobbs and up and coming musicians such as organist Adam Scone and trumpeter Sean Jones, who both would become featured artists on albums that ranked number one on the jazz charts, kept Prizant’s passion for recording strong. These experiences were instrumental in providing him with the inspiration and knowledge to continue to develop his ear for producing music.
Still heavily focused on the soul jazz style, Justin traveled to NYC in fall of 1997 to see the Greyboy Allstars perform at the Wetlands nightclub. He found that the band had the most unique ability to not only resurrect the vibe of 1970 boogaloo and soul jazz styles that he was familiar with, but were also capable of tastefully traveling in and out of new musical territories with seemingly limitless boundaries.
Two Years Later...
Justin had a chance to met the Allstars founding member and drummer, Zak Najor, in front of the Maple Leaf Music Club in New Orleans. After hitting it off, the two decided to create an album together. In the summer of 2001, Justin and Zak assembled a roster featuring musicians that inspired them and set out to record and shape a musical statement. Vocalists Gregory Porter (2014 Grammy Winner), Saxophone giant Karl Denson (Lenny Kravitz and The Rolling Stones), Guitar legend Melvin Sparks (Isley Brothers, Little Richard), and Hammond Organ specialist and Justin's hometown friend, Adam Scone (Lou Donaldson, The Sugarmen 3, Mo Fro), injected their energy and sound into every corner of the compositions. By exploring the musical possibilities along with these great artists, they expanded upon their early visions, furthering the final results beyond what we had ever hoped for. It was through Justin Prizant and Zak Najor's efforts and the efforts and contributions of many session musicians, engineers, and personnel, including family members that made these recordings a complete experience for listeners.
In 2013, Justin was contacted by Emanuel Fränzel, Gotz Buhler, and Membran Records in Germany. Together they licensed, marketed, and distributed Session Resurrection's recordings in 18 countries across the globe, essentially putting Session Resurrection and their recordings on the map.
